What motivated you to become an abortion access advocate?
As a legislative aide working with Wisconsin's State Senate, I've spoken with many constituents facing boundaries to abortion access. Before then, countless other people in my life expressed similar concerns. I've reached a point where I feel enough is enough. It's past time we began treating abortion like any other type of healthcare, and supporting access however we can. Working with the Women's Medical Fund has given me a real opportunity to support those passions.
Why is fighting for abortion care so important during the pandemic?
People need one another. Everyone benefits from supporting the health and well being of all members of our community, that includes supporting abortion, especially considering current circumstances. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, abortion providers across the country are fighting for their right to operate as an essential service, which they most certainly are. States attempting to stop abortion access during the pandemic are using a public health crisis to forward a separate political agenda, and that means it's more important than ever to voice our support for [abortion] access.
How can we expand telemedicine abortion in Wisconsin, where it is illegal? Why is that important, especially in this moment?
We need lawmakers to strike down laws that require the prescribing clinician to be physically present when prescribing it. [That would] greatly expand access to abortion without forcing people to leave home and put their health at risk in other ways.
What message would you like to send to abortion providers or those seeking abortions?
If they can, I'd encourage abortion providers to contact their legislators in support of telemedicine abortion. To those seeking abortions during this crisis, I stand in solidarity with all that you're going through and guarantee that you are not alone. We will continue fighting for your right to accessible healthcare until it's received.
