Why are you passionate about abortion care?
I was passively pro-choice until late into my undergraduate experience, when I took a mini-course on Abortion in the Media. It was a transformative experience to see the ways in which popular depictions of abortion created a deeply inaccurate view of all aspects of abortion (who gets them, how they're accessed, what happens after, etc.) and the ways it impacts policy. Later, after college, I got involved as a patient escort in Philadelphia, and that solidified that I wanted to be actively involved in the reproductive justice movement, not just passively pro-choice. But getting involved with WMF has probably been the most impactful! I've been so grateful for the opportunity to learn from such an incredible network of folks doing important work in Wisconsin and nationally to advocate for abortion access. I've gotten to know so much and continue to unlearn assumptions. Thank you WMF community!
Why is abortion care so important during the pandemic?
Abortion is essential but hard to access even in “business as usual” times. As we focus on meeting the needs of our communities through mutual aid networks, abortion must be included in that framework because it is life-saving care.
Why should we expand telemedicine abortion in this moment?
It would enable patients and providers to access abortion while not violating the public health goal of flattening the curve. An abortion is a safe, low-risk procedure and there are few practical reasons to deny the care be accessed via telemedicine, especially in this time of pandemic.
What message would you like to send to abortion providers or those seeking abortions?
Seeking and providing abortion is essential care! You are appreciated, loved, and held in this moment. Sending wishes for health and hope.
